About the Presbytery of Clyde
What is the Presbytery of Clyde?
The Presbytery of Clyde is a regional governing body of the Church of Scotland, bringing together congregations, ministers, and leaders from across our area.
Our role is to support, encourage, and oversee the life and work of local churches, helping them to serve their communities faithfully and effectively. We do this by providing pastoral care, guidance, and shared decision-making, while ensuring that churches are connected to the wider life of the national Church.
How the Presbytery fits within the Church of Scotland
The Church of Scotland is organised at both local and national levels. Individual congregations are grouped into Presbyteries, which act as a bridge between local churches and the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
The Presbytery of Clyde exists to:
-
offer oversight and care for ministers and congregations
-
support churches during times of change or challenge
-
ensure good governance and accountability
-
encourage cooperation and shared mission across the region
Our work helps churches remain rooted in their local communities while being part of something larger.
How we support churches and congregations
The Presbytery supports churches in a variety of practical and pastoral ways, including:
-
offering advice and guidance to kirk sessions and office-bearers
-
supporting ministers, readers, and lay leaders
-
assisting with transitions such as vacancies, new appointments, or pastoral changes
-
helping churches explore new ways of serving their communities
We aim to work collaboratively, recognising the unique character and calling of each congregation.
Presbytery structure and committees
The Presbytery is made up of representatives from local churches and ministers within the region. Its work is carried out through a number of committees, each with responsibility for specific areas such as ministry, mission, finance, and pastoral care.
These committees help ensure that the Presbytery’s work is carried out thoughtfully, responsibly, and in line with the values and priorities of the Church of Scotland.
Who’s who in the Presbytery
The Presbytery is supported by a small number of key office-holders, including the Presbytery Clerk and committee conveners. These individuals help coordinate the work of the Presbytery, provide points of contact, and ensure that business is conducted clearly and transparently.
Details of key contacts are shown below.
